Renault Eyes Production of 8 Gordini Electric Concept - 8 gordini electric
The 8 Gordini concept debuted at the Paris Motor Show this week.

Renault is considering producing a version of its new 8 Gordini concept, a retro-inspired electric two-seater coupe that debuted at the Paris Motor Show this week. While no production plans were announced initially, company leadership has signaled openness to the idea, contingent on the success of its upcoming R5 Turbo 3E hyper hatch.

The 8 Gordini concept draws design inspiration from the classic 8 Gordini of the 1960s, blending retro aesthetics with modern electric engineering. It features a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 266 horsepower, a figure Renault acknowledges is modest for a car with such striking design. Company officials noted the powertrain could potentially be upgraded to match the 5 Turbo 3E’s dual-motor setup, though this could raise pricing and alter the model’s positioning.

“With the R5 Turbo 3, we wanted to show that Renault has the capacity to be sporty and fun with an EV,” said CEO Fabrice Cambolive during the unveiling. “When we discussed Gordini, we wanted to show we could do an electric car with a lot of emotions, sportiness and desirability. And nobody told me ‘ah, it’s electric, I don’t like the car.’ First we have to sell the R5 Turbo 3E, and then deliver the first examples. After the Turbo 3E, the Gordini could be one of the opportunities.”

Concept car director Roman Gauvin said, “The original 8 was a very humble car, a sort of working-class hero.” He added, “We wanted to keep that honesty for this concept. It’s not a two-meter-wide, 1000bhp machine: it’s still approachable and makes you smile. It’s about how we position ourselves against sports car brands: for us, it’s the fun factor. We’re not here to design a car that’s going to shave half a second off a lap time at the Nürburgring; it’s fun, small, agile and nimble.”

The concept’s viability would depend on securing internal approval and proving a compelling business case. A lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car could help Renault retain enthusiasts of its heritage models as it transitions to electrification. Make it happen Renault.
