Jaguar’s Type 01 debuts in New York after five years of development as its first fully electric flagship.

The vehicle, revealed in New York, caps more than five years of development and serves as a defining moment for Jaguar’s electric future. Its launch follows closely on the heels of the Type 00 concept, which previewed this direction nearly two years earlier, and comes just months after the brand halted production of its final internal combustion models.

The Type 01 breaks from tradition with a design that abandons familiar Jaguar styling cues. The exterior eliminates the iconic grille in favor of a sharp, angular profile, featuring only minimal black air intakes at the front. Side windows are unusually compact, a compromise for the vehicle’s low, aggressive stance. Most controversially, the rear lacks a conventional window—an approach shared with the Polestar 4—though Jaguar includes a panoramic glass roof to maintain cabin openness.

Beneath its unconventional bodywork, the Type 01 houses Jaguar’s new Electric Architecture (JEA), built around an 118-kWh NMC battery and an 850-volt architecture. This configuration supports 350-kW DC fast charging. While exact performance metrics remain unconfirmed, the vehicle will be propelled by three electric motors producing 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar projects an EPA-estimated range of 400 miles, positioning the Type 01 as a viable long-distance luxury electric vehicle.

The interior adopts a similarly daring approach, though not without debate. Jaguar has rejected the oversized infotainment displays common in modern electric vehicles, instead integrating a 24-inch digital instrument cluster that handles both navigation and vehicle data. Climate and audio controls are managed through a smaller 7-inch portrait touchscreen on the center console. The cabin also omits a traditional rearview mirror, replacing it with a ClearSight Rear View Display mounted at the base of the windshield.

Jaguar will begin accepting orders for the Type 01 early in the coming year, with deliveries set to commence in the second half. Pricing starts at £130,000 in the UK and approximately $130,000 in the US. The vehicle’s market success will depend on whether buyers are willing to adopt its premium pricing for an electric vehicle that prioritizes performance and design innovation over conventional luxury features.

The brand’s decision to eliminate a traditional rearview mirror and large infotainment screens may either redefine luxury EV interiors or leave some buyers feeling the cabin lacks substance. The next several months will determine whether Jaguar’s strategy succeeds, or if the Type 01 becomes a niche experiment rather than a category-defining model.
