Alpina boosts torque for XD3 and XD4

Alpina has unveiled refreshed versions of its XD3 and XD4 sport‑utility vehicles, adding a modest visual refresh and a notable torque boost to the diesel powertrain.

Torque increase and drivetrain tweaks

The most significant change comes under the hood, where the manufacturer reports that the quad‑turbocharged 3‑liter straight‑six now delivers 590 lb‑ft of torque, an increase of 22 lb‑ft over the previous model. It keeps the torque curve broad, staying available from 1,750 to 3,000 rpm, while peak power stays at 394 bhp between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm.

This output is sent to an eight‑speed ZF transmission that powers a rear‑biased all‑wheel‑drive system. A limited‑slip differential on the rear axle can distribute torque between the rear wheels or lock completely when slip is detected. Such a drivetrain layout is typically reserved for BMW’s larger X5, X6 and X7 models, making its presence in the X3‑based XD3 a distinctive feature.

Performance figures and efficiency

Despite a curb weight of 2,145 kg (EU measurement), the updated XD3 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds and tops out at 166 mph. Fuel consumption is quoted at 39.2 mpg, which is considerably lower than the gasoline‑powered X3 M that BMW offers in the same segment.

Fuel efficiency remains strong.

The chassis receives subtle revisions: a new steering calibration, shorter and stiffer springs, and dampers that have been retuned. Alpina’s approach to suspension tuning continues to prioritize a blend of handling precision and everyday comfort rather than outright track‑day performance.

Standard wheels are 20‑inch with 255‑section tires up front and 285‑section tires at the rear. Buyers may opt for a 22‑inch package that widens the rear tires to 295 mm. The base brake setup is modest, but an optional high‑performance kit raises disc diameters to 395 mm in front and 398 mm at the rear, the latter size being unusually large for a vehicle of this class.

Exterior styling mirrors the recent BMW X3 and X4 updates, featuring refreshed front and rear bumpers, a new dash insert, and a freestanding infotainment screen. Interior trim options follow BMW’s standard palette, with an upgrade path to Alpina’s premium Lavalina leather for those seeking a more luxurious cabin.

Orders for the refreshed XD3 can be placed now, with deliveries slated to begin in August 2021. Pricing in the United Kingdom starts at £67,950, and the market will receive only the XD3 variant, as the larger XD4 is not slated for that region.

While the enhancements are relatively modest, the added torque and refined chassis settings give the XD3 a clearer identity among diesel‑powered performance SUVs. The move reflects Alpina’s strategy of incrementally improving existing platforms rather than launching entirely new models.
