Alpina relaunches as independent BMW brand

Alpina is relaunching as a standalone brand under the BMW Group umbrella, marking a shift in how the tuner’s cars will be marketed and sold. The rebrand, which officially completed on January 1, addresses earlier concerns that the Alpina name might be retired entirely. BMW has clarified that the new division will operate as an “exclusive standalone brand,” keeping the name active rather than mothballing it.

A new look for the rear end

The cars produced under this new arrangement will feature the text “BMW ALPINA” emblazoned at the center of the rear. This marks a visual departure from the traditional Alpina crest, which features an intake trumpet and a coil-over shock. There is currently no indication that the classic logo will be retained on future models.

Although no vehicles have been unveiled yet, BMW describes the cars as retaining the core Alpina hallmarks. The new lineup is expected to include exclusive design elements, specific material choices, and acoustic enhancements. The brand is positioning itself around a “balance of maximum performance and superior ride comfort with hallmark driving characteristics.”

Focus on bespoke options

The new BMW Alpina arm plans to expand its offerings regarding bespoke options and accessories. BMW has a history of successful M Sport accessory lines, and Alpina could follow a similar path. This approach risks diluting the brand’s heritage, which is built on exclusivity, but it also opens up a wider range of customization possibilities for buyers.

The last car to carry the name in its previous iteration was the B8 GT. It was a limited production model, with only 99 units produced, based on the 8-series Gran Coupe. That car was powered by a 6.6-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 624 horsepower and 626 pound-feet of torque. The new standalone brand must now prove it can deliver that level of performance and exclusivity without the traditional visual identity.

Having a distinct legal identity allows the company to handle potential regulatory changes more easily. If future legislation targets low-volume internal combustion engines, a standalone brand structure might offer some protection. This separation from the main BMW model range provides a strategic buffer that a sub-brand often lacks.

Alpina aims to maintain its high standards by offering a suite of bespoke features. Buyers can choose from various materials and packages that tailor the vehicle to their specific preferences. This level of personalization ensures that each car remains unique while adhering to the brand’s established reputation for quality.
