Custom car builder Gary Reid created the ShowTime Repco 933 based on a 996-generation Porsche 911.

A Porsche 911 with a front-mounted, twin-turbo V8 engine might sound like a radical departure from tradition, but custom car builder Gary Reid has proven it can work. The ShowTime Repco 933, based on a 996-generation 911, replaces the iconic rear-mounted flat-six with a 7.0-liter LSX V8 from GM, paired with Turbosmart turbochargers.

A Bold Engine Swap

Reid’s creation swaps the original flat-six for a 7.0-liter LSX V8, more than doubling the engine capacity. The V8 is mounted toward the front, with twin turbos and exhausts that shoot flames through the hood. This required extensive modifications, including a new firewall, floor, and transmission tunnel. Despite these changes, the engine still protrudes, necessitating a large hood cutout.

To handle the 1,200+ horsepower, Reid fitted an eight-speed Bentley transmission with sequential shifting. This setup far exceeds the power of even the Porsche 918 Spyder, delivering all its force to the rear wheels.

Beyond the Powertrain

The modifications extend beyond the engine. A heavy-duty cooling system is installed in the passenger compartment, and the interior features a custom dashboard with a new infotainment display, digital instrument cluster, and a Haltech steering wheel for on-the-fly adjustments. Carbon fiber Recaro seats and a bespoke transmission tunnel with a sequential shifter and hydraulic handbrake complete the interior.

For those who drift, this Porsche is equipped with a hydraulic rear handbrake, ensuring it’s not just a straight-line speedster. The exterior boasts a handcrafted body kit with flared arches, a carbon fiber hood, and a Le Mans Prototype-inspired rear wing. Custom Rotiform wheels (18×9.5 front, 18×10 rear) round out the look.

A Practical Shift for Enthusiasts

While the front-engined 911 may seem like sacrilege to purists, it’s a sign of the versatility of the platform. For enthusiasts, this build offers a unique blend of power, customization, and drifting capability. It’s a far cry from the standard 911, but it proves that even iconic designs can be reimagined in surprising ways.

The ShowTime Repco 933 isn’t just a showpiece; it’s a functional, high-performance machine. With its massive power output and drift-ready features, it’s a car that could hold its own in the final scenes of a Fast & Furious film. Reid’s creation challenges conventions, showing that even the most revered designs can be transformed into something entirely new.
