For one writer, the 2026 Passport TrailSport Elite is the perfect escape from the office. The author, a photographer who spends much of their time in the field, returned to the office in early 2026 but struggled to adapt to the harsh overhead lighting, soulless cubicle walls, and distracting co-workers. Instead of facing that environment, the writer loaded the vehicle with remote work gear and headed to Los Padres National Forest, where the air smells of sage and pines.

An Office on Wheels

Honda launched the Passport alongside the $425 Tailgate Table Shelf, a product designed to replace the beloved folding picnic table from earlier CR-V models. The accessory serves three functions: a cargo privacy cover, a shelf for small items, and a picnic table when legs are attached. It connects to the rear cargo area via spring-loaded pins that fit into channels along the front and rear.

Equipped with a Wi-Fi hot spot as part of HondaLink, the Passport becomes a rolling office. A three-month trial subscription is included with every new Passport, though a monthly fee of up to $20 applies after the trial ends. The author stripped their desk clean and loaded the vehicle with everything needed for the day, including a computer, keyboard, and mouse.

While the setup works in theory, the Tailgate Table Shelf presents significant usability problems. The composite surface has a 44-pound weight limit, and because it is flat, items placed on top shift around. The shelf bisects the rear cargo area and, due to its rigid construction, does not pivot up or allow access to the space underneath. The area beneath the shelf measures only 10.5 inches, which is too low to slide in a full grocery bag.

In table form, stability is an issue. The legs screw into the bottom of the shelf and have a fixed height. On uneven ground, the writer had to dig divots into the dirt to keep the table from wobbling. Even after leveling it, the surface feels unstable because the legs are attached by a single central screw. The product’s flaws have led to a constant stream of used tables for sale on the Honda Passport Facebook group.

Despite these design shortcomings, the environment makes the experience worthwhile. The writer drove three hours into the mountains and has no intention of going home after the workday is complete. The setup includes an iKamper Skycamp 4.0 Trio rooftop tent with a Comfort LT air mattress and an ARB fridge stocked with food and drinks. By the end of the day, the writer was calculating how many more “office days” could be worked remotely.

Setting Up the Skycamp 4.0 Trio

The Skycamp 4.0 Trio mounts on top of the Passport. The company released this fourth-generation model earlier this year. It features added luxury features and a new handle for easier setup. A Comfort LT air mattress comes with the tent to ensure comfort.

Plugged into the outlet in the rear cargo area, the ARB Classic Series II fridge is stocked with dinner and drinks. The writer uses the vehicle as a remote office and a place to sleep. The setup allows for a productive day and a peaceful night in nature.

Night in the Tent

As the sun set, the sky turned from pink to deep blue. The canopy above filled with stars, a sight unseen in the city. The writer repacked the computer and returned the table to the cargo area of the Passport, turning it once more into a cargo shelf.

Inside the Skycamp 4.0 Trio, the writer found rest. The Comfort LT air mattress provided a comfortable surface. The ARB fridge sat nearby, stocked with dinner and drinks. After a productive day, the writer slept soundly under the stars.
