Mercedes-AMG GT63 SUV’s Sport+ mode replicates a 6.3L V-8’s rev limiter clicks and wet-clutch transmission behavior.

The Mercedes-AMG GT63 SUV creates a performance illusion so vivid that drivers might overlook its electric nature. Engage Sport+ mode and the cabin fills with the deep growl of a 6.3-liter V-8, complete with rev limiter clicks and paddle-shift transitions that mimic mechanical precision. The only hint of its electric foundation comes from the absence of combustion sounds. Instead, the transmission mimics wet-clutch behavior and the tachometer displays a digital redline at 7,200 rpm. This theatrical blend of vintage cues and modern tech leaves drivers smiling, even when they know the engine isn’t real.

This SUV isn’t just the fastest model from Mercedes-AMG—it stands as the most powerful SUV available. In Race mode, it generates 1,153 horsepower and 1,475 lb-ft of torque, surpassing competitors like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric (1,139 hp, 1,106 lb-ft). Mercedes states a 0-60 mph time of 2.4 seconds, matching the Bugatti Chiron’s acceleration, though the comparison emphasizes electrified dominance over pure speed. This performance relies on the AMG.EA platform, shared with the GT 4-Door Coupe, which merges electric efficiency with the sharp handling of a traditional sports car.

The GT63 SUV’s design merges practicality with high-performance aesthetics. Unlike the low-profile GT 4-Door, it sits taller for better visibility and a roomier cabin despite its aggressive styling. Inside, it retains the coupe’s tech-focused design, carbon fiber accents, digital displays, and bold stitching, while adding usable rear seating for taller passengers. The driving position remains low and centered, with a steering feel enhanced by Hankook Ion tires on 23-inch rims (285/35 up front, 325/30 at the rear). The brake pedal offers smooth modulation, though the test track’s limited time left cornering capabilities largely untested.

Mercedes markets the GT63 SUV as a family-friendly vehicle with high-performance appeal. Its electric architecture enables both low ride heights and high power output, something impossible with a conventional internal combustion engine. The result is a vehicle that mimics the thrill of a supercar in sound, shifts, and acceleration while retaining SUV practicality.
