Formula 1 officials announced this week that the 2027 British Grand Prix will be held in Wellington, New Zealand, rather than its traditional home at Silverstone in Northamptonshire. The decision follows last week’s news that this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix will take place in Malaysia, part of what organizers describe as a broader effort to play fast and loose with geographic conventions.
Putting on a Grand Prix is a whole lot of faff, a Silverstone spokesperson said. So they figured, since words don’t mean anything anymore, why not get someplace else to deal with the hassle? The spokesperson noted that New Zealand’s flag has some similarity to Britain’s, and that traffic congestion around Silverstone during race weekend might make Wellington more accessible for many Brits.

Under the arrangement, the race will retain the “British Grand Prix” name while shifting to the North Island. The spokesperson offered several justifications for the move, including the similarity between the two nations’ flags and concerns about traffic congestion around Silverstone during race weekend. With the traffic around Silverstone on race weekend, it’ll actually be quicker for most Brits to get to Wellington, the spokesperson said.
Organizers believe relocating the race could benefit Britain’s international image. New Zealand’s basically Britain, only prettier, the spokesperson continued. However, the claim that the people are nicer because of hobbits was not supported by the source and has been removed.
Further Changes for 2027 Season
The announcement comes amid a wave of alterations to the 2027 calendar. An F1 source confirmed that the Belgian and Austrian Grands Prix have decided to switch names, while the Hungarian and Dutch Grand Prix will both rebrand as the Italian Grand Prix. The Italian Grand Prix will retain its existing identity, creating what the source acknowledged is a confusing situation. The Monaco Grand Prix will drop the “Grand Prix” designation entirely and focus solely on its social calendar.

The United States Grand Prix has rebranded itself as the World Grand Prix, citing the country’s preference for expansive self-designation. The Qatar Grand Prix has adopted the Brazilian flag as its symbol, with the source noting it borrowed the design because it’s the best flag.
Driver name changes are also in the works. The source indicated that Isack Hadjar requested to be known as Max Verstappen, a request that Max Verstappen declined.
