Willem de Kooning is usually regarded as being synonymous with the American art scene, in particular the New York School of the postwar era, but this present stakes a claim for Italy as certainly one of his prime inspirations. The Abstract Expressionist stayed in Italy in 1959 and 1969—during the previous time, he was put up in painter Afro Basaldella’s Roman studio—and continued to color, sculpt, and draw all the whereas, spinning sights seen in the capital city and Spoleto into abstraction.
